My First Impression: Creme of Nature Mango & Shea Butter and Acai & Keratin Product Line | on HairliciousInc.com

I grabbed these new Creme of Nature products at the Beauty Supply Store a couple weekends ago. If you know me by now, I am a Creme of Nature fan plus they were extremely affordable! I've tried each product, however, I cannot provide my full review as I haven't used each product long enough. But here is my first impression so far:

Creme of Nature Acai Berry & Keratin Strengthening Shampoo - For Dry, Damaged Hair - $4.99 CAD

I always wanted a strengthening shampoo and this shampoo stood out to me! The acai berry ingredient serves to prevent damage and the keratin amino acids aid in hair repair. The shampoo is an opaque pearlized purple colour and smells like tropical grape fruit juice - no lie! It's so delish the scent does not leave your hair for days :) To be honest, I have never seen purple shampoo before so that alone was fascinating to me lol! I don't need much product for it to lather and it rinses out easily. Though there is a mild sulfate in the Shampoo (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), my hair remained moist and felt durable after rinsing it out.

Creme of Nature Mango & Shea Butter Ultra- Moisturizing Conditioner - For Dehydrated Hair - $4.99 CAD

This conditioner can be used as an instant conditioner or as a deep conditioner with heat for 10 mins+. The conditioner is orange in colour yet semi thick in consistency. The conditioner has the exact same tropical scent as the shampoo. It's truly heaven!  I've been using it with heat under my steamer for 20-25 mins. The conditioner spreads easily onto my hair - no issues there! So far I find the conditioner softens my new growth and hair pretty well. Unfortunately there's not much slip while rinsing out the conditioner.

Creme of Nature Mango & Shea Butter Ultra-Moisturizing Shampoo - For Dehydrated Hair - $4.99 CAD

This shampoo states that it is enriched with certified natural mango and shea butter. The mango ingredient serves to condition and protect the hair while the shea butter will moisturize and soften the hair. It also has Olive oil and Shea Oil.  The shampoo is an opaque pearlized orange colour plus it smells amazing!! It has a prominent tropical fruity scent that lingers in your hair. It lathers well and rinses out great. Though there is a mild sulfate in the shampoo (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), I find the shampoo is highly moisturizing, slippy and detangling while I rinse it out. It kinda reminds me of  the CON Argan Oil Shampoo that I adore.

So, I will continue to test these products out on wash day and see how my hair reacts overtime :)

My Wash Day Routine - Updated!

My Relaxed Hair Regimen | on HairliciousInc.com

Having a concrete wash day regimen is imperative to a successful hair journey! Through excessive trial and error over the years, I have managed to find a routine that has worked for my hair allowing me to get to my goal and maintain it.

Giving my hair a weekly dose of both moisture and protein has allowed my hair to maintain moisture and strength while decreasing breakage - thus retaining length. Though I have my staple products, I like to switch up my products every now and then, but I always keep the same routine - no matter what.

I have updated my regimen as I no longer co-wash on Saturdays. So instead of having 3 wash days, I only have two (Sundays and Thursdays) - max! I find that my hair no longer needs that extra dose of moisture.

SUNDAYS

Sundays:
→ Prepoo with a light protein for 15-20 mins with a heat cap, rinse
→ Shampoo
→ Deep Condition with a moisturizing conditioner for 25-30 mins with heat, rinse
→ Apply Leave-in and lightly comb through
→ Air dry with the Scarf Method (if needed)
→ Moisturize and seal. Apply JBCO to my scalp in sections (optional)

THURSDAYS

Thursdays:
→ Deep Condition on dry hair with a moisturizing treatment/oil for 25-30mins.
→ Co-wash with a Moisturizing Conditioner
→ Apply Leave-ins and lightly comb through
→ Air dry with the Scarf Method
→ Moisturize and seal. Apply JBCO to my scalp in sections (optional)

Daily:

Others:
- Relax every 10-14 weeks
- Dust/trim when needed (approx every 4-6 months)
Baggy my ends when dry
- Light Protein Treatment 1x/week
- Clarify 1-2x/month
- Wear protective styles 99% (buns)

Knowing Your Hair Porosity Is Key To A Successful Hair Journey

Knowing Your Hair Porosity Is Key To A Successful Hair Journey | on HairliciousInc.com

Let's face it, knowing your hair type (i.e. 3c, 4a, 4b, etc.) is great as it allows you to discover your hair texture, curl pattern, density etc. However, discovering your Hair Porosity level is imperative to getting the most out of your hair journey. Hair porosity is a simple concept yet very powerful in revealing certain characteristic about your hair. Learning what porosity level you have, will provide you with direction on how to treat and take care of your hair - effectively!

Understanding your hair porosity level can maximize the effectiveness of your hair routine and improve the product and technique selection for your hair.

What is Hair Porosity?
Hair Porosity is your hair's ability to absorb moisture and retain it. It's just that simple! There are three (3) porosity levels to consider: low, normal, high.

Low Porosity?
Hair cuticles lay flat and tight around the cortex making it challenging for moisture to enter and escape the hair cuticle. The cuticle is quite resistant to opening and readily accepting water. Opening the cuticle may be troublesome, but once it's open, it will accept, hold on/ retain moisture for a long period of time.

Normal Porosity?
Hair cuticles lay flat yet open and close easily to accept and retain moisture. Hair maintains elasticity.

High Porosity?
Hair cuticles have holes and damage along the hair shaft allowing moisture to escape through the hair cuticle easily. Moisture retention is low and the hair feels dry and coarse. This is the result of chemically treated hair or heat damage.

Now, let's zone in on Low and High porosity as these levels require the most maintenance!

Characteristics of Low Porosity Hair
  • Takes long to dry
  • Hard time absorbing moisture
  • Retains moisture really well once accepted
  • Tend to resist chemical services i.e. colour, relaxers

Tips on How to Take Care of Low Porosity Hair
  • Steam frequently - Warm steam vapours help to raise the cuticles and allow the deep conditioner to absorb easily into the hair shaft.
  • Moisturize on damp hair - This allows the cuticles to raise slightly thus giving your moisturizer the chance to penetrate the hair strands. Once the hair receives the moisture, it will hold on to it very well.
  • Baggy your hair often - Baggying will help raise the cuticles drawing moisture into the hair
  • Always use heat when you deep condition - Heat allows the hair cuticles to raise/open. The deep conditioner can then easily penetrate into the hair cortex giving nutrients i.e. moisture, protein etc. to the hair strands.
  • Clarify often - 2-3x/month will help lift the hair cuticles allowing any deep conditioners, leave-ins, moisturizers to penetrate easily.
Characteristics of High Porosity Hair
  • Dries very quickly after washing
  • Tangles easily
  • Feels dry and/or brittle after moisturizing
  • Absorbs products easily
  • Chemical treatments process fast

Tips on How to Take Care of High Porosity Hair:

    • Add a mixture of Water and Aloe Vera Juice in a spray bottle (1/4 AVJ, 3/4 Water). Use this before adding your leave-in conditioner.
    • Add 1-2 tsps of Aloe Vera Juice in your deep conditioner to lower the pH balance of the conditioner.
    • Do an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse 1x/week after you shampoo or co-wash your hair. Apple Cider Vinegar is known to lower the pH balance in the hair and close the cuticles allowing your hair to hold on to moisture.
    • Use Roux Porosity Control Conditioner weekly as a quick condition or 1 tbsp in your moisturizing deep conditioner.
    • Use a protein reconstructor weekly or biweekly to fill the cracks along the hair shaft allowing the hair to absorb and retain moisture.
Knowing your Hair Porosity level gives you the power to transform your hair into healthier well-moisturized hair.

      Now Take The Tests!
      #1 - Water Test

      #2 - Strand Test

Grab a shed strand of hair. With your fingers, slide up the strand starting from the ends to the scalp - backwards. If your fingers move easily up the strand and it feels dense - you have non porous hair aka low porosity hair. If it feels smooth, you have normal porosity hair. If it feels rough, bumpy or it breaks, you have porous hair aka high porosity hair.

What is your Hair Porosity Level?

      Low Porosity
      Normal Porosity
      High Porosity

How To Celebrate Relaxed Hair When Everyone Is Going Natural | on HairliciousInc.com

Having relaxed hair nowadays appears to be rapidly becoming a "thing of the past" as many ladies are returning to their natural hair. While this is great news, many ladies (like myself) still choose to remain relaxed, for various reasons.

As a relaxed haired individual, I frequently hear the common phrase "when are you going natural?" I then think to myself, "am I supposed to go natural?""is going natural expected of me?" and then it dawns on me "hey? I am still enjoying my relaxed hair! I don't feel the need to return to my natural hair right now". This lead me to think that though many have decided to go natural, it's important for me not to forget all the fantastic things I love about my relaxed hair, the way it is!

Here are 7 ways to Celebrate your Relaxed Hair:

      1. Focus on the reason why you choose to remain relaxed. Make an effort to remind yourself of these reasons - often.
      2. Write a “love list” about your hair. Invest energy on what you like/love about your hair while relaxed. Highlight all the things that you are grateful for i.e. hairstyles that you love on your hair, products that agree with your hair, etc. Whatever it is, write it down! Find reasons why you truly love your hair in its relaxed state.
      3. Zone in on your goals that you would like to achieve while relaxed. Keep your eye on the prize.
      4. Reward yourself, and your hair, with a product or tool you’ve been eyeing for months.
      5. Give your hair the gift of extra time. Pamper your hair will all the things it loves i.e. deep conditioning with your favourite DC, oil treatment, or prepping your hair for your favourite hairstyle.
      6. Put some happy in your hair journey. Find a gorgeous photo of relaxed hair that you love, i.e. hair idol, and make it your wallpaper on your computer, smartphone or stick it on your vision board to remind you of how beautiful relaxed hair is.
      7. Photoshoot! Nothing like a hot selfie to get you going. Make it fun, make it you! You”ll be glad you documented the moment.
Celebrate your relaxed hair and all the joy it brings!

Truth: The enticing titles "Ultra-Moisturizing"& "For Dehydrated Hair" captured my attention to want to try this shampoo for my high porosity relaxed 4b/c hair. After many washes with this shampoo I can actually say that it's very moisturizing and slippy despite having two surfactants (i.e. Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine) in the ingredients. Though it does contain "Amodimethicone", a non-water soluble silicone, further down in the ingredient list there are two surfactants present in the ingredients. With the presence of surfactants, the "Amodimethicone" will not stay deposited on the hair. I love the fact that the shampoo is opaque in colour with an orange glossy appearance, not to mention it smells very fruity/tropical. The triple dosage of Mango Seed Butter, Shea Oil and Shea Butter really help to intensify the conditioning effect in the shampoo making my hair feel so soft and conditioned.

      Pros:
      • Fruity Tropical Scent
      • Slip while rinsing out the shampoo
      • Detangling abilities
      • Conditioning
      Cons:
      • Contains silicone
      • Two surfactants

Ingredients: Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Chloride, Amodimethicone, Parfume (Fragrance), Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Olea Europe (Olive) Fruit Oil, Phenyl Trimethicone, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernal Oil, Panthenol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Trideceth-12, Cera Alba (Beeswax (Cire D'abeille)), Citric Acid, Isopropyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Yellow 6 (CI 15985), Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Red 4 (CI 14700)
*Mango & Shea Butter are certified natural ingredients

Truth: I've used this conditioner as a deep conditioner with and without oils for 20-30 mins using heat many times. Both methods worked out good. It spreads and penetrates easily into my strands making my hair feel soft.  It has the same tropical fruity scent as the conditioner (this may bother some who are sensitive to scented products). Now, here's the part that disappoints me... I always look for the "moisture" and "slip" factor in a DC and this conditioner has fallen short - unfortunately. Slip is important as it helps me detangle my hair while in and out of the shower, without the use of heavy manipulation on my hair. With this conditioner, the slip factor is just not there for me!

      Pros:
      • Softens hair
      • Fruity Tropical scent
      Cons:
      • No slip
      • No Detangling abilities

      Outre 3D X-Pression Crochet Braids Review | on HairliciousInc.com
      Something different indeed!

Since the end of Summer '16, I've been doing a bit of research on a protective style that would:
      • give me a break from my hair for a few weeks
      • allow me access to my scalp
      • be affordable
      • lightweight (no tension to the scalp)
      • quick/fast to install
      • fun to style
I've found that crochet braids encompasses all of these things ... and more!

The other day I posted a picture of my new protective style on Instagram and received requests to blog about this new do!

      A photo posted by Sunshyne☀️ (@hairlicious) on

My cousin was able to bless me with her skills (it was a first time for the both of us *Shhhh*) and we had so much fun doing it!  She did my cornrows and then crocheted the individual braids. My cousin followed all the steps in the video below from Kiitana, to braid my hair in the "X" pattern. She crocheted my ends into the braids itself (to make it more compact). I have about 10 cornrows from ear-to-ear. The entire process took approximately 2 hours.

Below is the make and style of the 3D Braid that I used. I love the fact that the braid is in a cube-like form. It's 3 dimensional look makes it very unique and chic! It reminds me of the 90's box braids style - which I love so much!

I got colour 1B in 18" inches. It's extremely lightweight yet very textured and thick. What's also unique about this hair is that it's twisted at the ends helping to prevent the braid from unraveling. I used a total of 5.5 packs. Each pack was $10.99 CAD at the Beauty Supply Store.

      Night-time care:

I picked up this spandex cap to protect my crochet braids at night. I use a long rectangular satin scarf around the perimeter of my hairline to keep it neat and fresh everyday. After I tie my scarf, I then tuck all of my ends into the spandex bonnet and pull it over to the top of my head. The bonnet is so stretchy with a satin feel and it fits all of my braids perfectly. I picked this up for $4.99 CAD at the Beauty Supply Store.

Overall I'm loving this fall/winter protective style!!! My hair is tucked away and I don't have to think about it for a while. Plus, the hubby approves the new look :) I always wanted box braids but couldn't stand the thought of sitting down for 6-7 hours and worrying about my hair being dried out by the "braid hair". With these crochet braids, I can now spray my scalp and new growth with my Scurl No Drip (maybe every 2 days) with ease knowing that my hair will not dry out.

To be honest my scalp is not used to the "tension", though it is mild. What can I say? I'm tender-headed! I know the feeling will pass over the next couple of days so I'm not worried. Anyway, I love how quick and easy it is to style-and-go! I think I will leave it in for approximately 3-4 weeks. I'm currently 13 weeks post relaxer so I'll probably remove the braids early December and relax shortly after.

      Just wanted to share!

It's been approximately 2.5 weeks since I installed my 3D Crochet Braids and I loving them dearly! It's so easy to style not to mention the hair accessories added to any style really help to 'kick it up a notch'!  Oh and the random compliments are a bonus too :)

Here are my 4 go-to styles I've been rocking while wearing my crochet braids. They are super easy, cute, great for different occassions and gentle on the scalp.

My absolute favourites would be the Top Knot and the Side Flat Twist. Here is a quick pictorial of how I create these two styles:

Step 1: I place my hair accessories in my braids in areas that I like. You can get them at any Beauty Supply Store.

5 Ways To Improve The Elasticity In Your Hair

      $
      0
      0

When it comes to Healthy Hair Management, the elasticity level of your hair is extremely important. Well, what is elasticity anyway? Elasticity is your hair's ability to "withstand tension and bounce back easily after extension with minimal breakage"*.

Hair is elastic - to put it simple! Having optimal levels of elasticity gives your hair  s t r e t c h i n g  power that allows your comb to easily move through your hair without breakage from the manipulation. Lack of elasticity causes your hair to snap off and break at every little tension placed upon your hair. So essentially, increasing your elasticity means increasing the moisture levels in your hair.

Improved elasticity not only improves styling and manipulation of the hair but it also reduces premature breakage. Hydrated hair = Improved Elasticity = Less breakage! #Goals

Here are 5 easy ways to help improve the elasticity in your strands:

      1. Incorporate Extra Virgin Olive Oil In Your Regimen
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is known to penetrate into the hair cortex up to at least 25%. The fatty acids aid in improving the strength and elasticity of the hair strand. With frequent use as a pre-shampoo or mixed into your deep conditioner, you will notice improved stretching power in your hair.

      2. Frequent Washes and Treatments
Wet hair is naturally more elastic than dry hair. Frequent washes and moisture conditioning treatments will help moisten your strands and relax the hydrogen bonds in the cortex improving the hydration levels and elasticity in each strand. Note, proper protein dosages are also needed to resist breakage.

      3. Baggying Your Hair
Well moistened hair will return to its original state when stretched, rather than snap off and break when dry. Baggying your ends, or entire head rather, creates an environment where the plastic bag traps heat helping to re-activate your moisturizer. This draws moisture and softness into the hair thus increasing your hair's ability to stretch beyond its original length and return to its original state without breaking.

      4. LOC/LCO Method
The liquid, oil, cream & liquid, cream, oil methods are ideal for locking moisture into the strands. The retained moisture enhances the elasticity while easing possible stress in manipulation and friction.

      5. Steaming vs. Hooded Dryer
Steaming releases warm water vapours as opposed to dry heat accompanied by hooded dryers. While steaming, the warm water vapours easily seep into the strands increasing hydration and the penetration of the conditioner. Remember, increased elasticity will be present in effectively moistened hair.

      Ingredient Spotlight Pt.4: Hydrolyzed Collagen

      What is Hydrolyzed Collagen?

Collagen is made up of small peptides obtained through the process of hydrolysis.

What does it do for the hair?

Hydrolyzed Collagen absorbs and temporarily bonds to the hair.  Hydrolyzed Collagen aids in fortifying and strengthening the hair from the inside out preventing breakage. It creates a protective shield over the entire hair shaft helping to prevent damage. Hydrolyzed Collagen enhances the appearance of your hair by increasing thickness, sheen, elasticity and softness.

After several requests to do a review of my 3D Crochet Braids and how I moisturize it, I decided to do a video to capture my overall experience.

This video highlights the pros and cons to this protective style including how I maintain it at night, how I keep it neat, my moisturizing spray and method. I wore this style for a total of 4 weeks stretching my relaxer to 16 weeks post relaxer! Wootwoot :)

       Enjoy!

      My Hair Goals for 2017!

      Happy 2017!!

Oh it feels so good to say that :) A new year means a fresh start and what's a better way to kick off 2k17 than to begin with some key hair goals?!! My goals this year are more on the specific side as I want to be as clear and concise as possible in order for my goals to be attainable. Check out my #7 hair goals for 2017 and my plans to achieve them!

      Lets go....

      #1 Enhance Thickness
I know time and time again you've heard me say this but I love big THICK hair. I honestly believe my hair can get thicker than it currently is. I plan on incorporating a Biotin supplement (3000-5000mcg) with my daily multivitamins, henna glossing and lessening the time I spend smoothing during my relaxer process so that more texture remains in each hair strand.

      #2 Consistently Consistent
Though I've been on my hair journey for several years now I, too, am guilty of failing to stick to my regimen - whole heartedly! I have my days when laziness takes overrr i.e. co-wash instead of deep condition etc. and I'll see and feel the difference in my hair :( just to save time (which is a no-no!). As a reminder, I plan on typing out my hair regimen on a colourful sheet of paper outlining my regimen. I'll stick it on the bathroom mirror so I'm constantly reminded to not skimp on any wash day duties.

      #3 Bun More
In 2016, I wore my hair down quite a bit i.e. braid outs etc. Though it was my goal to enjoy my hair more, I've now opted to rock more buns (bun = protective styling = length retention) and to spice it up with cute yet glam hair accessories, #BunGlam for the win!

#4 Relax at 10-12 weeks. Period!
I've experimented with stretching past 12 weeks post relaxer quite a bit and I've slowly come to the conclusion that I'm not a fan i.e. excessive tangles (no matter what I do) and I habitually tend to smooth more (during my relaxer process), because of all the new growth I get, making my hair a little too straight. This year, I plan to stick to my relaxer schedule and not venture past the 12 week mark.

      #5 Invest In A Wig
In the early parts of my hair journey, I religiously wore a lace front wig 4-5 days a week to eliminate daily manipulation and my hair retained up to 6" inches in length that year.  I don't think I would wear a wig every single day, but it would definitely come in handy on those days where I just want to leave my hair alone. I plan on finding something that mimics my hair type/texture and length.

      #6 Remove Old Products
I have accumulated a lot of products over the past year and to be honest, a lot of them are old and half way done or completely empty but still on my product shelf!! LOL I plan on doing a thorough spring cleaning this year of all my hair products and to zone in on my staples.

#7 Trim with every other relaxer
Oldie but a goodie! I used to do this consistently; however, I fell off slightly last year. This has been imperative in maintaining healthy ends. Gotta add it to the list!

My First Impression: Lusters Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Line

The lovely people over at Lusters Products Inc. sent me over some new hair goodies and I just had to share!! As you may or may not know, I am a huge fan of Lusters Products Inc. as they are the ones who created my staple moisturizer, Scurl No Drip Activator. With that in mind, I am excited to receive the new Shea Butter Coconut oil, paraben free, mineral oil free product line. Seems like they've re-branded themselves and I'm curious to see what these products have in store!

My First Impression: Lusters Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Line

....Okay so they sent me over a ton of products! I had to group them by numbers to share my first impression of each product.

#1 Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Hot Oil Treatments - These are 10 in 1 hot oil treatments promoting a self heating formula enriched with natural oils i.e. Vitamin E, Jojoba seed oil, Castor oil, Coconut oil, Grapeseed oil, Shea Butter etc.   The blend of natural oils sounds pretty good! Based on the directions, you apply it to damp hair and leave it on for 10-15 mins - no need to shampoo after!

#2 Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Sulfate Free Shampoo -  The shampoo has a very fresh "coconuty/fruity" scent. I love how its opaque in colour (typically means its non-drying). It has Hydrolyzed Keratin and Collagen Amino Acids in the ingredients which aid in strengthening the hair while lubricating the strands with natural oils i.e. Coconut oil, Olive oil, Jojoba oil etc.

      • Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Moisturizing & Silkening Conditioner - The conditioner is white in colour and slightly thin in consistency with the same fresh "coconuty" scent - though it is mild. The directions state that you can deep condition with this product for 10+ mins with heat & a plastic cap! There's nothing but straight moisture and a few of my fav ingredients in this conditioner i.e. Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Polyquaternium-37 etc. just to name a few.
      • Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Silkening Leave-in Conditioner - States that it will hydrate, detangle, soften and add slip. The creme is white in colour and slippy between the fingers. I love the fact that it has Glycerin, Panthenol and Marshmallow root extract! These ingredients are known to hydrate and detangle natural or relaxed hair!
My First Impression: Lusters Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Line

#3 Pink Jojoba & Grapeseed Oil (Daily Treatment), Apricot Oil (Ultra Light Treatment), Castor Oil (Nourishing Treatment), Tea Tree Oil (Therapeutic Treatment) - These oils are not 100% pure as they do have other oils added to them i.e. Soybean oil, Argan oil etc. I will probably mix them into the deep conditioner for extra TLC.

#4 Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Edge Smoother Gel - Claims to have lasting hold and brilliant shine. I have tested this out on my edges and it seems to have a "medium/light hold" on my 2/3 weeks post relaxed hair. I will have to test it out again when I'm further into my stretch.  The edge smoother has a very mild fresh scent.

#5 Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Detangling Co-wash Cleansing Conditioner - Very thick and rich in consistency compared to the Silkening conditioner and leave-in. This co-wash has similar ingredients to that of a drug store instant conditioner i.e. Aussie moist, Herbal essences etc. which totally agree with my hair! It will be interesting to see how this compares.

      • Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil Curl & Twist Pudding - This product is supposed to stretch tight coils, provide hold and control frizz. Love the consistency of this product - very chunky with a jello like "shake" yet it melts easily into the hair. It's packed with interesting ingredients i.e. Kola nut seed extract, Aloe Vera Leaf extract, Lemongrass extract, Henna extract, Papaya fruit extract etc. I plan on using this for future twist-outs and braid-outs!
      • Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil  Moisturizing Hair Lotion - Claims to seal in moisture, soften hair and control frizz. Now don't confuse this with the "Ol'skool Pink Lotion", though many may think they are one in the same - they are not!  This moisturizing lotion has no trace of mineral oil, in fact, it has some goodies i.e. Glycerin, Olive oil, Avocado oil, Coconut oil, Shea butter, Panthenol, etc. I know my hair doesn't typically like hair lotions, but we shall see :)
      Thanks Lusters! xoxo

Why Your Hair Will Say Thank You To Protective Styling

Why Your Hair Will Say Thank You To Protective Styling
I must say that protective styling has been my saving grace throughout my hair journey. Why? Because it allowed me to retain length, moisture and save time! Though I would periodically wear my hair out and rock a flat ironed style, I would always default back to my trusty protective styling regimen. Here's why...

Protective styling is key to the preservation of your ends! Truth be told, your ends are the oldest part of your hair; therefore, your ends are much more fragile than the rest of your strands. They need care, 'babying' and lots of it. Wearing your hair loose and manipulating old fragile ends on a daily basis inevitably leads to dryness, breakage and damage.

      A photo posted by Sunshyne☀️ (@hairlicious) on

Check out these 5 Reasons Why Protective Styling is Your Friend:

      1. Ends Get a Break - With your hair up off of your shoulders your ends will be protected against fabrics that create harmful friction and environmental factors which can prematurely cause hair cuticle damage.

      2. Locked in Moisture - Wearing your hair down and loose, regularly, can enable the hair strands to lose internal moisture causing dryness making your hair more prone to splitting. Ensuring your hair is effectively moisturized, from root to tip, and wearing it up in a protective style will lock in moisture.

      3. Length Retention - Hair regimens that emphasize protective styling typically experience longer hair faster as the hair is not manipulated frequently by styling tools, exposed to harsh fabrics or environmental elements i.e. wind, sun, air, rain etc. Protective styling + locked in moisture = length retention!

      4. Maintain Cuticle Thickness - Wearing the hair loose, on a daily basis, increases wear and tear on the hair strands.  As the hair is constantly exposed to outside elements, the roughening of the cuticle begins. Over time, the strands will begin to show a decrease in cuticle thickness causing thinness. Protective styling gives your hair a vacation by slowing down the wear and tear process and allowing you to maintain your strand's cuticle thickness.

      5. Saves Time - Throwing your hair up in a bun, rocking braids or twists saves time when time is against you. You can easily jazz-up a protective style with a few hair accessories and immediately head out the door - which I so greatly appreciate.

Protective styling, daily or on a flexible schedule, will aid in increasing the quality and length of your hair.

My Hair Is Loving This Old-School Product! - Care Free Curl Gold Instant Activator

...Talk about blast from the past LOL :)

I re-purchased this product just for the heck of it a couple months back. I used to use it back in the day, when I first started my hair journey, and it was pretty good to me until I fell in love with my Scurl No Drip Activator ♥♥

      Fast forward...

Shortly after I removed My Crochet Braids in December 2016, my hair has been a little temperamental i.e. small random knots, tangles etc. In a panic, I searched through my product stash for a little pick-me-up and Care Free Curl Gold popped out at me. What caught my attention about this moisturizer was the fact that it has Behentrimonium Methosulfate in the ingredients and its very slippy in consistency. As you may or may not know, Behentrimonium Methosulfate is a detangling agent that is typically found in conditioners or leave-ins. I figured this should help alleviate my hair struggles and IT DID!

My hair has been soaking up this moisturizer so much!  It gives my braid-outs a nice wet look and my air dried hair has not had as much shine/sheen since I starting using CFCG!! I'm shocked. The tangles melt away with every dose of this slippy activator. This random product "re-visit" has been a good one and I think Care Free Curl Gold will be in rotation for a bit!

What Old School Product Do You Still Have In Your Product Stash?

Twist out with Luster's Pink Curl & Twist Pudding & Leave-In Conditioner!

Lately, I've been using the Luster's Pink Shea Butter Coconut Oil line in my day-to-day hair routine.  I think I've found a few favourites. I've noticed myself reaching more and more for the Silkening Leave-in Conditioner as the last step on wash day. This product works so well on damp hair, it's creamy and the slip is crazy - with no 'cones!!

The Curl & Twist Pudding has a 'jello-like' consistency yet dissolves easily between your fingers. A little goes a long way giving me a soft/medium hold and it smells amazzzing!!

I did a twist out on slightly damp hair using the Curl & Twist Pudding along with the Silkening Leave-in Conditioner and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

My steps were super easy! I made 6-8 undefined sections in my hair, two-strand twisted each section (after applying a little bit of both products) and secured my ends with orange perm rods - went to bed! I unraveled my twists in the AM. Results below!

I typically don't do twist-outs much, so I didn't know what to expect, but I'm loving this look! The moisture, sheen and curl hold throughout the day was better than I anticipated.

      Thanks Luster's Pink!

7 Habits of a Successful Hair Care Journey

If you're reading this post it means your interested in learning, or possibly fine tuning, habits for a successful healthy hair journey. As with anything in life, what you repeatedly do becomes a habit. Right?

      HABIT :

      noun   \   hab-it

A habit is a routine of behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously.
Throughout the years, I've picked up on key habits that most, if not all, successful hair journeyers possess. By successful I mean:

      - ability to reach their hair goals i.e. in length, thickness, etc.
      - have made the transition from damaged to healthier hair
      - maintain healthy hair after reaching their intended hair goals

Just through simple observation, I have found hair habits that seem to be universal across the board. These key habits provide a great foundation and guideline for those who are just starting their hair journey or need a little re-fresher! Sometimes we get caught up in new products, techniques, and tools that we get side tracked from what truly works for our hair. These 7 Habits of a Successful Hair Journey all work simultaneously to create the foundation for a successful hair journey!

"Sometimes we get caught up in new products, techniques, & tools that we get side tracked from what truly works for our hair @hairlicious" - Click To Tweet

Check out my list of 7 Habits of a Successful Hair Journey, below:

      1) Consistency - With anything that you want to accomplish, there needs to be consistency. Those who have a successful hair journey display consistency in how often they deep condition, moisturize and seal, consistently wearing a satin scarf to bed, laying off of heat etc. Their consistency reaps results! It's all about staying consistently consistent!

Don't give up! Be consistently consistent in your hair regimen & you'll begin to see results | HairliciousInc.com

      2) Set Regimen -
Vital! As you continue to stay consistent and notice positive results, a regimen will develop. Regimens are necessary as it is a habit of routine behaviour. Most, if not all, healthy hair journeyers have a regimen that they follow on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. They tend to not deviate from their flow. This routine behaviour produces predictable results helping to heal and/or maintain their healthy hair.

      3) Patience - Those who have achieved their desired hair goals know that patience is a virtue and a key component. Having unrealistic expectations can lead to failed/unsuccessful hair journeys. Those who have a successful hair journey exercise patience through the good, bad and ugly.

      4) Keep It Simple - It's just that simple! I find many ladies who have reached phenomenal lengths and thickness keep a very simple, easy to follow regimen (let's not forget the products too). Less is more! By keeping things simple it allows you to understand your hair, know what works and it takes the confusion out of it, allowing you to reach your goals with ease.

Find a regimen & products that work for you - stick to them! Keep your hair care regimen simple & leave your hair alone - you'll get to your goal faster! | HairliciousInc.com

      5) Know Your Hair - As a follow up to the point above, the best way to learn the behaviour/characteristics of your hair,  is to keep things simple! Simplifying your products and your routine will give you a chance to see how your hair responds - so important.  Paying attention to the way your hair speaks to you will put you at an advantage to attain your goals. You will know the unique do's and dont's according your your hair.

      6) Holy Grail Products - Let's face it, there are a ton of products out on the market for relaxed, natural, texlaxed and transitioning hair. Everyone wants to try the "new stuff" - which is great. But what I've noticed is that those who have a successful hair journey, tend to always revert back to their holy grail/staple products. Though they try a new product here and there, they always have their staple products in rotation (this goes back to Consistency). Their "tried and true" products die hard!

      7) Low Manipulation/Protective Styling - Those who have a successful hair journey know the importance of leaving their hair alone and laying off of direct heat for a period of time that best suits them. They have routine behaviour of choosing styles that will not add stress and/or strain to their hair i.e. buns, braid-outs, twist-outs, up-dos, box braids, wigs etc. In fact, many hair journey's that display success are a result of just leaving the hair alone.

What do you think? Would you apply these techniques? What habits have you incorporated into your hair journey?
