My New Hair Vitamins! - GNC Women's Hair, Skin & Nails Soft Chew

Over the weekend I went to GNC in Buffalo, NY and grabbed a few packs of these tasty Hair, Skin and Nail soft chew vitamins. I'm so excited to share this because these soft chews are my current hair obsession! I've tried them in the past but because I wasn't consistent enough, I didn't bother track my results.... but I did receive great results i.e. increased growth!

I know there are tons of HSN vitamins on the market; however, these vitamins are by far my favourite. Why you ask? well for starters, they taste so good i.e. grape juice! In fact, I always remember to take them because they taste so good:) Not to mention they help promote hair growth, healthy skin and stronger/longer nails...and I don't have to swallow them!! I'm such a big baby when it comes to swallowing pills, I'd rather chew :)

These hair candies vitamins ($22.00 US), come in packs of 60 filled with the following (info based on one(1) soft chew a day):
  • Vitamin A - 1000 IU
  • Vitamin A a multi-functional antioxidant that promotes healthy skin, hair and nails and also enhances the immune system. Vitamin A allows the scalp to produce sebum which aids in the thickness and shine of hair.
  • Vitamin C - 60 mg
  • Vitamin C helps to build collagen, a protein that is crucial in the progress of hair growth. Effective in the treatment of hair loss. Aids in the health of the skin and enhances the immune system. Increases scalp circulation, which aids in hair growth.
  • Vitamin D - 400 IU
  • Vitamin D3 Plays a key role in preventing hair loss as well as fostering hair growth. Enhances the immune system.
  • Biotin - 3000 mcg
  • Biotin (B7) B-complex vitamin useful in the prevention of hair loss and premature graying. Promotes elasticity within the hair’s cortex while thickening cuticles to eliminate breakage. Decreases itchy dry and flaky scalp. Supports the health of the hair, skin and nails.
  • Type I & Type III Collagen - 250 mg
  • Collagen type I is abundant in the skin, tendon, ligaments, bone, teeth, and in between organs. Collagen type III is abundant in the muscle, blood vessels, and skin
  • Silica - 25mg
  • Silica helps regenerate skin, hair and nails by repairing connective tissue, which may result in hair growth and a significant delay in greying.
  • Hyaluronic Acid - 5mg
  • Hyaluronic acid can improve your skin’s moisture content and strengthen skin’s barrier.
  • alpha-Lipoic Acid - 5mg
  • Alpha lipoic acid protects both cell membranes and the inside of cells against oxidative damage, helping skin attain a youthful and healthy appearance.
  • Lutemax 2020 Lutein - 500 mcg
  • Provides skin hydration.
You may ask, "so why are you taking hair vitamins at this point in your hair journey?" Well, I have goals in mind for this Summer and I think using a vitamin, this time around, will help expedite them!

Hair Goals:

a) Longer, thicker hair
b) Stronger nails
c) Clear smooth skin

As I mentioned before, I experienced a large amount of growth while taking these vitamins in the past while being inconsistent.  This time around I want to be consistent & document it! Can't wait :)

What are your favourite hair, skin and nail vitamins? why?

5 Things Your Not Doing To Retain Length!

$
0
0

Since I began my hair care journey back in 2007, I've literally received thousands of questions on how I grew my hair to the length that it is now. I know many hope to believe that there's a "magical" product that will keep your hair healthy and grow it all the way to mid-back length overnight - but there isn't! Growing long healthy hair takes commitment, of course, and a combination of doing several hair care practices - consistently!

Let me be the first to let you know that products alone will not help you retain length. There are five "necessary" things you need to be doing in your regimen in order to increase your length retention and enjoy healthier longer hair.

Honestly Hairlistas, products are important to help you manage your hair, whether you are relaxed or natural; however, it doesn't end there. I would say 90% of a successful hair routine (i.e. retaining length) is comprised of healthy practices and consistency throughout the process - no  s e c r e t s!

Here are the things that you're not doing when it comes to retaining length and growing your hair longer than ever before.

MOISTURIZING & SEALING YOUR ENDS
This is huge! Probably one of the most important things you can incorporate into your hair journey is moisturizing and sealing your ends. How often? Well that all depends on your hair i.e. porosity level, density etc. Your ends are the oldest part of your hair. Since my hair is mid-back length, my ends are approximately 3-4 years old and they are the most fragile area of my hair. I've learned that the health of your ends determine whether or not you will retain length or not (trim, breakage, split ends). Oh don't forget, dry hair breaks! Failing to moisturize your ends on a consistent basis can lead to dryness which can result in split ends and breakage. Breakage is the #1 cause for not retaining length; therefore, you need to prevent it from happening in the first place. Moisture, moisture, moisture!

LEAVING YOUR HAIR ALONE
A big mistake I made when I first began my hair journey was the constant amount of manipulation in my fragile over-processed relaxed hair! Back then, I felt as though "the more I do to my hair, the more my hair would grow", for example, frequent detangling/brushing/combing, constantly changing hairstyles, trying tons of products at once etc. I thought the more attention I showed my hair i.e. manipulating it, the more it would grow. That was quite the opposite :( Keep things simple and leave your hair alone! Stick to your usual wash day routine and try to leave your hair alone until next washday. Try detangling once a week, instead of styling your hair daily. Throw it up in a bun, rock a wig, or opt to keep it in braids or weave for a couple months. Most importantly, use less direct heat i.e. flat ironing, blow drying, curling etc. Less manipulation i.e combing, styling etc. prevents the loss of protein in the hair, hold ups the integrity of the strands and decreases breakage = healthier ends = more length! LESS is MORE!

WASHING FREQUENTLY
Contrary to popular belief, washing your hair often is a good thing. By often I mean every 3-4 days or once a week. The reason I say this because water is the ultimate moisturizer and the more your hair touches water, the more moist it will be, helping to preventing breakage. Frequent washing not only cleanses the scalp but it stimulates blood flow which then helps to increase growth to longer hair = length retention!

DEEP CONDITIONING WITH HEAT
When your hair is healthy, length will come! Deep conditioning is imperative to achieving and maintaining overall healthier hair. All of my hair idols deep conditioned at least once a week for 20-30mins, more importantly, using a heat source i.e. heat cap, hooded dryer, steamer. Deep conditioning treatments assist in making the hair manageable and fortified to resist damage i.e. breakage. Using a heat source helps to open the cuticles along the hair shaft so that the nutrients from the treatment can penetrate to the cortex of the hair shaft. Deep conditioning helps to heal damage from the inside outward for longer stronger hair.

LISTENING TO YOUR HAIR
This is such an under developed skill in the healthy hair care community! Many tend to silence what their hair is truly telling them, instead they are listening to others and tuning themselves out. I hate to break it to you, but if this skill isn't developed, the success of your hair journey is at risk. Just because  a hair friend endorses a product but your hair is screaming for you to stop using "said product",  that doesn't mean you continue. If your hair begins to excessively break, shed, become rough or dry to the touch, after repeated use...STOP and listen to your hair. If you notice your hair is dry - moisturize it. If you notice your hair is extremely limp - do a protein treatment. If you notice that your hair breaks horribly every time you blow dry and flat iron - stop using direct heat! Your hair will speak to YOU and guide YOU, you just have to sit back and listen.

I hope you enjoyed these tips. They are the real deal and I've sworn by them as they've helped me retain and maintain my length over the years.

Loving My Natural Hair™ Presents: Tori

Introduce yourself! what's your name? where are you from?
My name is Tori. I was born in Kingston, Jamaica. I moved to Dallas, Texas when I was 16 years old and have been living here ever since.

How would you describe your hair? What's your hair type?
My hair would be type 4 according to the hair typing system, primarily 4b/c, with looser textures in the front and back sections.

When did you start your natural hair journey? What is your hair regimen? Share a few of your favourite "go-to" hair products.
I started my hair journey in 2009. My relaxed hair was really damaged so when I first started my hair journey, I simply wanted healthier relaxed hair. I stumbled upon YouTube videos of ladies who had beautiful, healthy relaxed hair and I wanted to see if some of their tips would help improve my hair. In 2010, I began transitioning back to my natural texture. After transitioning for a year and a half, I big chopped in 2012. My current regimen is pretty simple. I shampoo and deep condition my hair every two weeks. I usually keep my hair in large braids or twists, moisturizing and re-braiding as needed. I moisturize my hair once or twice a week and I will occasionally co-wash if my hair needs a midweek refresher. Some of my favourite hair products: Any of the Shea Moisture Shampoos Camille Rose Naturals Deep Conditioners (all of them) Oyin Hair dew, Kinky Kurly Knot Today, Sweet Almond Oil

What #1 hair tip you would pass on to other natural haired ladies who are currently Transitioning or about to Big Chop?
My #1 hair tip would be to keep things simple. The wealth of information on YouTube and hair blogs can often be overwhelming. But, I have learned to not get too caught up with what every one else is doing. Focus on what works for you, find a simple routine/regimen and stick with it.

More than ever before, ladies are transitioning back to their natural hair and we love it! What made you go natural? What are your thoughts on the natural hair movement and your hair? Would you consider relaxing your hair again?
I made the final decision to go natural after being diagnosed with Alopecia Areata. I also fell in love with my natural roots in between my relaxers. I absolutely love that more and more ladies are making the decision to return to their natural textures; I think it’s very empowering. In a society where young girls are constantly made to feel like they are not beautiful, I think seeing others boldly rock their beautiful natural hair is something that our younger generation can definitely look to for motivation and encouragement. The thought of relaxing again has crossed my mind, but I probably wouldn’t. Relaxers were really damaging for my hair. Plus, my natural hair offers a bit more versatility.

Name a challenging moment you experienced in your natural hair journey and how did you overcome it?
I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss and/or bald patches. I was treated by a dermatologist and have not had any known problems since.

What do you absolutely love about your natural coils? And why?
I love everything about my hair to be honest, but after my experience with Alopecia, I have learned to appreciate the thickness of my hair even more than before.

Magic Star Seamless Jumbo Rake - Best Wide Tooth Comb Ever!

$

0

Hands down this is by far one of my absolute favourite hair tools for 2016. If I'm about to detangle, add volume or just simply comb my hair.... this is the comb I always reach for!

What I love most about this comb:
  1. It's BIG in size and the teeth are far apart
  2. Glides easily through my hair
  3. No seams = No snagging = LESS breakage
  4. Very sturdy so it feels secure in the hand
  5. Great to use for any style
Unique qualities about the Jumbo Rake:
  • Made by hand from 100% Vulcanized Natural Hard Rubber
  • Tried and tested design with perfect ergonomics
  • Twist-resistant and yet flexible
  • The teeth are hand-sawn, hand-cut, and hand-polished to perfection!
  • Non-porous (will not support the growth of mold or mildew); guaranteeing hygiene
  • Chemical and heat resistant
  • Antistatic (prevents fly-away hair)
I notice less breakage and no snagging when using this comb opposed to shower combs I've used in the past. This comb helps to preserve the hair cuticle. This is HUGE!

The Jumbo Rake helps to remove shed hair, but not entirely as the teeth are far apart. I notice LESS hair in the comb and I comb my hair 2-3 times a week. It doesn't remove knots in the hair as the teeth are too far apart for that; however, I typically use my fingers to separate any knots.

I love the versatility of this comb as I can use it for detangling on wet or dry hair, fluffing out my braid outs at the roots, styling my hair or in the shower while rinsing out my conditioner. The possibilities are endless!

Price: $19.50 USD

Hairlicious Rating:  (5/5) Excellent

I think it will definitely be a part of my hair care arsenal for years to come. I can't see myself using any other wide tooth comb. It's perfect for relaxed hair, natural or transitioning hair too!

My Relationship With Coconut Oil - Staple In My Regimen!

$

My relationship with Coconut Oil has been a strange one! If I mix it with my deep conditioner - my hair is "oh so" soft yet strong for weeks. If I use it as a pre-shampoo treatment, my hair is rejoicing with praise. It's no surprise, my hair just loves it!

Now here is the tricky part!  If I use Coconut oil on my hair, and don't rinse it out i.e. sealant, my hair throws a tantrum! I'm talking about rough, stiff, dry hair. I have yet to figure out why it behaves this way...its okay though, that doesn't stop me from using this GEM! I just know how to use it to my benefit :)

I never miss my weekly dose of Coconut oil because it:
  • Prevents protein loss
  • Penetrates into the hair cortex
  • Preserves the hair cuticle from damage
  • Repairs the hair from the inside out
  • Strengthens and fortifies the hair
  • Prevents shedding
Coconut Oil is my staple! My relaxed hair loves it!!! Through consistent usage I've noticed increased strength, smoothness and fullness in my relaxed hair. I add about 1-2tsp to my deep conditioners and it does the trick!

How do you use Coconut oil in your hair regimen? What benefits have you noticed in your hair while using Coconut oil?

Introduce yourself! what's your name? where are you from?
My name is Traycee Simmons from YouTube and Instagram. I'm from the sunny Los Angeles, California.

How would you describe your hair? What's your hair type?
I have high density hair and my individual strands are very thick and coarse. I'm 3c/4a mixed low porosity hair.

When did you start your natural hair journey? What is your hair regimen? Share a few of your favourite "go-to" hair products.
I big chopped August 2015 and officially started my natural hair journey. I try to keep things simple (KISS). I'm a wash and go girl.
Regimen:
1x a week with a no sulfate shampoo
1x a Deep Condition under hooded dryer b/c I'm low porosity
Co wash mid week only if needed
Bentonite Clay Mask 1x a month

I air dry or use the cool setting on hair dryer with a diffuser . I don't use heat on my hair. I love using the L.O.C. method whenever I moisturize. I usually moisturize when my hair needs it and not daily.
I love the Shea Moisture line. They have a line for everything and they are always on sale at Walgreens and CVS - its easy on my pockets. I like to stock up when they have their BOGO sale.

My favorites from the lines are Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Masque and the 3 in 1 Masque. My wash and go "must have" is the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing smoothie & Eco Styling Gel.

I love the Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter for my braid outs.

What #1 hair tip you would pass on to other natural haired ladies who are currently Transitioning or about to Big Chop?
My advice to all of you that are transitioning is to be patient. Transitioning was one of the hardest and scariest things I've ever done. Do everything in small sections and do low manipulation styles. I transitioned for 19 months using wigs. Protective styles helped me so much.

My advice to those that are preparing for your big chop would first be do it when your ready. You will have a set of people trying to get you to chop right now and another set that will try to talk you into waiting. You have to do it when your ready because the pressure is real. You may also be surprised by your texture after you big chop. I was natural almost 20 years ago but wore my hair straight and was completely dependent on my stylist during that short phase of my life. I thought I was a 4C ... I was completely shocked by the fact that I was a 3c/4a. I honestly hate hair typing and I feel its not important. I do understand that it helps people know your hair type but I feel that knowing your porosity is much more important if retaining length is important to you.

More than ever before, ladies are transitioning back to their natural hair and we love it! What made you go natural? What are your thoughts on the natural hair movement and your hair? Would you consider relaxing your hair again?
I'm loving the natural hair movement. The natural styles I see give me so much life. I'm totally late to the party. I didn't actually chose to go natural. I was kind of forced into it because of my eczema. I've always had eczema but it was at its worst and relaxing was making me miserable. I loved my relaxed hair and was blessed with a great relaxed hair journey. I didn't struggle with retention. I kept my relaxed hair at waist length. I didn't know how much I depended on my length and relaxed hair until it was gone. Going natural was very scary and emotional for me. I didn't have my long hair to hide under anymore and I had to adjust seeing myself with kinky hair. Seeing so many beautiful naturals on Instagram helped me so much. I'm so in love with every thing about my natural hair now. I have confidence now that I didn't know I was missing. I'm so thankful for the natural hair movement. These women taught me to see beauty in myself in my most natural form.

I would never relax again. I'm just too much in love with my natural hair. If I have ever crave straight hair I will just throw on a wig or flat iron my hair. That's the beauty of being natural, I can have the best of both worlds!

Name a challenging moment you experienced in your natural hair journey and how did you overcome it?
My hair is growing and I'm retaining length well. My most challenging moments now are still with my scalp. My eczema is doing much much better now but because of my allergies I still have flare ups. Staying away from chemicals and sulfates has made a huge difference. Finding a hair style that fits my very active lifestyle was another challenge. I workout hard 5x a week so it was frustrating in the beginning. Wash and go's work best for me and I just pineapple while I train. The next challenge is a twist out. I've tried multiple times and failed LOL.

What do you absolutely love about your natural coils? And why?
I love my coils because they are mine. It's what God gave me! I love that its both kinky and coily. My natural hair makes me feel more free spirited and truer to myself.

Know Your Ingredients Pt. 4

It'sssss BACK!

Know Your Ingredients Pt. 4 series is back in full swing and I'm excited to share it with you. I am a huge advocate for spreading healthy hair care knowledge, and that includes sharing information on ingredients too i.e. what it means, what it does to the hair, and what products you can find them in etc.

If you're an "ingredient inspector," like myself, ingredient knowledge (on hair products) will be a key factor that you will value throughout your hair journey. By knowing and understanding the ingredients in your hair products, will not only turn you into a better "hair product shopper"; but it will allow you to grasp the concept of knowing what products will work for your hair and why. It's like you'll be able to predict how your hair will feel just based on reading the ingredients and understanding their key functions - this is HUGE!

Are you an "ingredient inspector" when it comes to hair products? If so, what ingredient(s) does your hair adore?

Or, if you're a newbie to ingredient knowledge, what particular ingredients peek your interest?

Relaxer Update: Letting It Hang!

$

Last Relaxer: May 30, 2016
Used: ORS Olive Oil Relaxer Normal Strength
Duration: Left the relaxer on for 25-28 mins
Treatments used: ORS Replenishing Conditioner with 3 Penetrating Oils (Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil) for 30 mins under the steamer.
Last flat iron: June 3rd, 2016

This relaxer turned out great! My new growth cooperated and 'took' to the relaxer - it got straighter than usual, with a bit of kinky left over. I love when there is a bit of 'kink' left in the hair as my hair remains stronger and less prone to excessive breakage. I didn't relax my edges this time around. I'm still relaxing my edges every other relaxer (no smoothing), so just letting the relaxer sit on it for 5-10 mins. This method has really given my edges a 'break' and a chance to get stronger.

In the pics above I'm rockin' a 10 day old flat iron. I preserved my flat iron by wrapping my hair every night with a bit of Jojoba oil on the ends. I typically flat iron after a relaxer to trim my hair and for length check purposes, and then quickly wash my hair 2-3 days later. This time around I wanted to really enjoy my freshly relaxed hair by leaving it 'out' for a week or two. I deviated from the norm and I'm okay with it! I'm at a point in my hair journey where I want to not only maintain the health of my hair, but also enjoy the fruits of my labour aka letting my hair hang freely (without guilt) aka anti-protective styles for a tiny bit :)

Those GNC Hair Skin and Nails Soft Chew vitamins (April - June) really gave me a boost in growth this time around! I had to continuously smooth out the back (crown + nape area) with a comb because my new growth was throwing a tantrum! Luckily my new growth cooperated and we got the job done! Overall, my hair seems a tad but thicker as a result of the vitamins (3000mcg of Biotin). I think I will continue to use them and give an update at 6 months usage.

Just wanted to share :)

What is Polysorbate 60?

Polysorbate 60 is an emulsifier. Emulsifiers enable water and oil to stay mixed together.

What does it do for the hair?

Polysorbate 60 keeps oil and water together in the hair allowing the hair to stay moisturized for longer periods of time; thus, helping to retain length. It adds releif to dehydrated hair. Effects increase when combined with Cetyl alcohol.

Loving My Natural Hair™ Presents: AprilBeee_

Introduce yourself! what's your name? where are you from?
Hi my name is April Bee. I’m originally from Bronx, New York but I’ve lived in Virginia for quite some time now.

How would you describe your hair? What's your hair type?
I have many different textures throughout my whole head. In some areas it’s curly, some areas it's coily while others are wavy. I would say that my hair type ranges from 3c to 4b.

When did you start your natural hair journey? What is your hair regimen? Share a few of your favourite "go-to" hair products.
I started my natural hair journey on December 28, 2012 which is the day that I big chopped. As for my hair regimen….I really don’t have one to be honest. I just go with the flow and do whatever my hair tells me. If my hair is feeling dry, I make sure that I do a deep conditioning treatment to bring back the moisture, or I’ll co-wash with my favorite conditioner. My go-to product is Shea Butter! That’s right! I like to keep it simple when it comes to the products that I use. I used to be a product junkie when I first went natural, but I’ve found that "simple is best" and Shea Butter works wonders on my kinks, curls and coils! I like to use Shea Butter when styling my hair in a braid out or twist out. I spritz my hair with water, apply a small amount of Shea Butter on top…and my hair comes out perfect!

What #1 hair tip you would pass on to other natural haired ladies who are currently Transitioning or about to Big Chop?
The #1 tip I would pass on to others would be to have PATIENCE…enjoy the journey…enjoy the different hair stages…and embrace your beauty…the length will come before you know it!

More than ever before, ladies are transitioning back to their natural hair and we love it! What made you go natural? What are your thoughts on the natural hair movement and your hair? Would you consider relaxing your hair again?
My two younger sisters are the ones that inspired me to go natural. They both had beautiful, curly, shiny hair. I wanted to see what my natural hair looked like. Not to mention…I was also tired of getting relaxers and it burning my scalp. I’m happy that the natural hair movement is thriving and more ladies are returning to natural and discovering their natural beauty. It’s a wonderful thing and I hope that people continue to see the importance of embracing what God gave us! I would relax my hair again….however….you’d have to pay me some BIG BUCKS!! LOL

Name a challenging moment you experienced in your natural hair journey and how did you overcome it?
I don’t recall ever having a challenging moment. My natural hair journey has been smooth sailing thus far. Love your hair and it will love you back!

What do you absolutely love about your natural coils? And why?
I love the versatility. I love that I can wear my hair curly one day and straight the next! Going natural is the best decision I have ever made when it comes to my hair!
Let's Keep In Touch!

Okay Hairlistas so this is my first length check for 2016! Woot woot :) I know I know, I haven't done a length check in a while.  I noticed that since I made my decision to maintain Mid Back Length my length checks decreased because I'm "maintaining" now.

This year, I think I'm pretty close to waist length - post trim. Yay!!! My hair has slightly increased in thickness. I'm attributing the thickness increase to my GNC Hair Skin & Nails Soft Chew Vitamins. These soft chews have been the only 'new' thing I've incorporated into my hair regimen - nothing else! I still use the same staple products, techniques, and regimen. As I mentioned before, these vitamins have a ton of Biotin (3000 mcg) in them, which helps to promote hair growth and thickness.

Over the years, my relaxed hair has become much more resilient due to my consistent usage of protein treatments, coconut oil pre-poos and moisturizing & sealing daily! I try to leave my hair alone as much as possible (aka protective styling) and use my fingers or wide tooth seamless comb when styling my hair - you won't catch me using a fine tooth comb! My hair has become predictable in a sense that there's no 'guess work' when it comes to maintaining my hair. It has decreased and I'm okay with that!

Overall, I'm loving my relaxed hair and I'm happy with my length for #Summer16 !!!!

July + August ..In a Nutshell

I know I know. Two full months have flown by and I've been absent on my blog for a hot min! Well, I'm back and I have a perfectly good explanation for my absence...

I had a wedding and got married to my bestfriend - YUP!

You see, planning a wedding is NO JOKE! It literally takes every fiber of your being, mentally (i.e. budgeting, picking theme colours, picking linen, reading reviews, magazines etc.) and physically (i.e. hiring vendors, finding a venue, food tasting, cake tasting, dress shopping, etc.)...especially when you are so particular like myself *sigh* July and August equalled crunch time! So those two months were a write-off for me as I actually had no mental space left to focus on my blog, as per usual.

Anyways, back to my brief wedding synopsis...it was on Sunday August 21, 2016 with an intimate guest list of approximately 95 of our closest family and friends. Our special day was truly a magical event and hands-down the best day ever! The theme colour was splashes of Tiffany Blue, Ivory linen and flowers with Bling! The day was flawless from start to finish, from waking up at 5:45am, to watching the rain turn to beautiful sunshine, to eating breakfast with my bridesmaids, turning the house into a full studio set with hair and makeup, to arriving at the church and walking down that isle with butterflies in my stomach...it was perfect. I heard of a few wedding disasters i.e. cake melting, vendors not arriving on time, heels breaking, wrong limo showing up etc. and because of that, in the back of my mind, I was actually expecting something to go wrong but it didn't - thank you Lord!

On to the reception! My husband and I love love love comedy! We are literally at most, if not all, major comedy shows in our city. We had a West Indian comedian grace our family and friends with his charm and funny jokes. It was one of the many highlights of the night that we will never forget. After the bouquet and garter toss, my husband and I cut and fed one another cake to "Happily Ever After" by Case (love that song!!!). We then danced the night away to our favourite tunes along side our family and friends on the dance floor. Oh, and of course we had to have a Photo Booth to make the night extra fun, and special :)

BEST DAY EVER!

P.S. Missed my blog dearly though *wipes away tears*

7 Ways To Thicken Relaxed Hair

This question ---> "How do I get thicker relaxed hair?" is probably the most frequently asked question I have received while on my hair journey. It's definitely a question that I love to answer simply because I always desired to know how I could thicken up my own hair, prior to starting my hair journey in 2007. Since then, its been my mission to find the answers! Here are a few tips I "swear by" that have helped me thicken up my relaxed hair!

1. Stretching Relaxers
It is highly recommended to space out your relaxers as far as possible. Why you ask? Well by stretching out your relaxers you are giving your hair a much needed break so that your new growth has a chance to grow in fully before reapplying your relaxer touch up. On the flip side, when your new growth is not "visible", the possibility of overlapping your relaxer i.e. applying relaxer on the previously relaxed hair, is HIGH. Overlapping your relaxer is a HUGE no-no as it can cause thinness, breakage and overall damage to your relaxed hair. Stretching your relaxers (10-12 weeks minimum) makes your hair stronger and thicker over time!

2. Using Normal Strength Relaxer NOT Extra Strength
Normal strength relaxers tend to process the hair at a much slower rate than extra strength relaxers. The slower process along with a quick application time (15-20 mins; fast relaxer speed = less processing = less texture removed from the hair = thicker hair) is a great way to leave texture in your strands. More texture = thicker/dense strands. Also, apply the relaxer to the new growth ONLY - nowhere else. Previously relaxed hair does not need to be relaxed again (this is called over-processing which leads to thinness).

3. Protect Your Previously Relaxed Hair While Relaxing
Never ever relax your hair without your ends being protected from the relaxer. Relaxing previously relaxed hair can cause your hair to be over-processed which eventually leads to thinness and breakage. Protecting the length of your hair, all the way to the ends, creates a barrier between your hair and the run-off of the relaxer. Beware that rinsing out your relaxer, without protection, the length of your hair is at risk of being processed!  It is essential to coat your strands with Vaseline (nothing is penetrating through that), Castor Oil, or Porosity Control Conditioner for maximum protection.

4. Pre-poo With Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the most penetrating natural oil and very beneficial for relaxed hair. Coconut oil is known to protect the hair from protein loss when used as a pre-shampoo treatment. In other words, it helps prevent damage to the cuticle/hair as it penetrates deeply into the cortex of the hair; therefore, little to no protein is lost. Less damage = stronger fuller cuticle = thicker hair.

5. Weekly Light Protein Treatments
Protein is your friend but more importantly, relaxed hair needs it! Protein causes the hair to swell in diameter thus increasing the thickness of your relaxed strands. Protein treatments strengthen and fortify the hair preventing breakage. Always use products with "hydrolyzed protein" as they are small enough to penetrate into the hair cortex, i.e. hydrolyzed keratin, hydrolyzed collagen, hydrolyzed animal protein etc., to aid in patching up damaged areas along the hair shaft creating a fuller thicker strand. Always follow up your protein treatments with a moisturizing treatment to soften and smooth out the hair.

6. Cut off thin ends
Remove thin ends immediately. As the saying goes "health over length" is nothing but the truth! Don't hold on to thin ends for the sake of claiming "BSL or MBL". Even if your hair will be shorter once trimmed, there is nothing better than seeing hair with beautiful full blunt ends. Your hair will automatically feel and look thicker. Maintain your trimmed ends on a cycle that works for you i.e. mini trims every 8 weeks, trims every 3 or 6 months etc. Remember to use sharp shears designed for hair cutting only.

7. Use Products with Panthenol
Panthenol is a humectant commonly found in deep conditioners and leave-ins. Humectants draw moisture from the air into the hair. Panthenol is also capable of penetrating the hair cuticle and cortex; therefore, helping to thicken each hair shaft naturally up to 10%. Look for deep conditioners and leave-in products (moisturizers too!) to aid in thickening up your hair.

Ingredient Spotlight Pt.4: Hydrolyzed Keratin

What is Hydrolyzed Keratin?

Amino acids broken down small enough to penetrate and adhere to the hair shaft providing it with strength and protection against damage.

What does it do for the hair?

Due to its low molecular weight, Hydrolyzed Keratin provides temporary repair to damaged hair by filling in the cracks along the hair shaft caused by i.e. chemical treatments, excessive direct heat, manipulation etc. Hydrolyzed Keratin will fortify and strengthen the hair by penetrating into cuticle and cortex of the hair shaft. Due to its moisture binding capabilities, Hydrolyzed Keratin increases the moisture content in the hair, restores shine and body, increases elasticity, reduces breakage and increases manageability. Hydrolyzed Keratin is a necessary component in keeping your hair healthy.
